The Stay Mentally Healthy (SMH) Campaign
Together we can create a paradigm shift in mental health provision by 'bridging the gap'. It is time for change, that time is now!
The Stay Mentally Healthy (SMH) campaign aims to bring awareness to the 'gap' between existing mental health services and those in need of support. Many individuals fall into this 'gap' as they struggle to access the help they require for various reasons.
The 'Gap'
Our research indicates that many individuals either can't or won't access mental health services, and even when services are available and accessible, stigma, past negative experiences, and a preference for self-help often prevent people from seeking assistance.
Through this campaign, we seek not only to shine a spotlight on the issue, but to also provide a solution. We can through our SMH Hubs and SEJ services alleviate the pressure on overwhelmed services by providing self-help services, thereby addressing the issues of long waiting lists, often impossible criteria to meet, stigma, past negative experiences alongside a preference for self-help.
Why a campaign?
Many people fall into this gap, Jacqueline Mary was one of them. She fell into this gap over 40 years ago, and although much has been done in recent years to educate and inform people about their mental health, current research and advocating for those in need shows the gap has not closed, and may even be wider than it has ever been due to the enormity of the mental health crisis we face today.
Mary (as she prefers to be known), has experienced not being able to access the right support readily, negative experiences, and a fear of stigma in reaching out for help. All this led to a fear of seeking further mental health support with an overwhelming desire to find her own solutions. It is time to listen and fill this gap, empowering everyone with the tools to stay mentally healthy.
Our aims are to:
-
Listen and advocate on your behalf - we have documented your needs and evidenced them through our research. We will continue to listen and bring awareness of the issues.
-
Fill the Gap - Provide accessible and affordable guided-self help through our SMH Hubs.
-
Move away from reactive intervention to proactive self-help prevention easing the burden on overstretched services.
-
Foster collaboration across communities: Work and think collaboratively and holistically across families, businesses, and education.
-
Create a mentally healthy world!
The best way to join our campaign
As individuals we each need to gain a better understanding of our own mental health, in particular the link between staying mentally healthy and reaching full potential. We need to learn how to empower ourselves, to address difficult life situations in the moment they arise, preventing escalation and the need for intervention. The SMH Hub services which can integrated into your workplace, educational setting or local community enable the practitioner to both identify stressful and limiting thoughts affecting a person's mental health, and at the same time address them, before their mental health deteriorates and for some reaches crisis point where intervention is needed.
The best way to join our campaign is to empower your own mental health and share your own life changing experiences. With over 90% of people finding empowerment after just one SEJ session together we can empower our own mental health and create a mentally healthy world. Other ways to join are to speak to your friends and family, employer, job centre, educational setting, politicians and leaders, to become part of the change to create a mentally healthy world. Together we can create a paradigm shift in mental health provision by 'bridging the gap'. It is time for change, that time is now!
